Gary Neville: Manchester United evolution more important than Premier League finish

Gary Neville considers Manchester United under Gunnar Solskjaer’s growth needs to be more important than their Premier League finish this year.
It has been an up and down start to the season for Man Utd, who began with a 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea, until draws against Wolves and Southampton sandwiched a shock property loss to Crystal Palace.
However, they got back to manner last weekend, beating Leicester 1-0 at Old Trafford, and Sky Sports pundit Neville believes Man Utd are going down the path.
“I believe that is the 1 thing concerning this United team this year, there’s no doubt that they all look to be facing in the ideal direction,” he said on Monday Night Football.
“A big debating stage between Manchester United fans at this moment in time is if what is happening today is decreasing expectations in the meaning they’ve not gone huge in the transport market in terms of net spend. There is a sense that they have lost Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Romelu Lukaku and they’ve signed three players that are enhancing and young.
“There is a feeling that they gone backward and just invested #60m to #70m net. From this viewpoint, there’s a feeling that they need to have purchased another center and yet another midfielder since the midfield is weak.
“I applaud what Manchester United’ve completed this summer in a way only since they have made enormous mistakes. I’ve been critical of these from the transport window, paying on the top for players, they’ve responded to groups looking like their signing players and panic purchased. They have got to prevent that, therefore there needs to be a strategy and a strategy – there hasn’t been for the previous seven years.
“What it looks like now is that they have gone to a strategy of registering emerging British gamers, bringing academy players through and identifying global talent. At this moment at time, United age has come down to 24, you will find just eight academy players from the group, but there is a sense of several Manchester United fans this isn’t great enough and that expectations have been lowered.
“I really think United have taken a step backward but a step in the ideal way to proceed because enough is enough of all these 30-year-old players arriving, maybe not suiting the design. They’ve got to stop that because it’s not worked for your golf club.
“What I’m saying is they have changed management. Whether you want it or that I enjoy, it is a change of management. At Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, they’ve got players that have got a long time. The three of them have started.
“There’s a sense that Manchester United have young players are they good enough or are they not? I look at the players in the team against Leicester and there is Perreira Wan-Bissaka, McTominay, James and Rashford. I say to myself are they? At this period in time. They have got to prove themselves. They all seem promising and they’re working at their maximum in each and every match.
“Top four along with winning a trophy would be a prosperous season. That is where Manchester United are in. That’s unacceptable regarding where United must be, but they are incapable – following six or seven years of bad recruitment – of going into first from sixth, seventh or fifth. They’re nowhere near that at this moment in time.
“They will have to get three or four good transport windows. The absolute most significant thing in the past window was adding two or three players of the ideal sort, it had been making sure that they didn’t create any errors. I don’t think they’ve done . I think Man Utd this season would be stronger with Fellaini Herrera and Lukaku, however they won’t be because these players will never get Man Utd.
“Of course, Man Utd have to win the Premier League name. That needs to be the barometer and should never alter, but you can’t go out of not enjoying the group with football to winning the team. There’s a measure in the center of getting better football, enjoying the group and them you are able to start moving upward.
“There were obvious examples. Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, he achieved Champions League victory without a prize after four years, but everyone in the club could observe he was about the ideal path. Frank [Lampard] and Ole need to convince their plank and lovers they are on the ideal path.
“I think being on the ideal track this season is more important than fifth, third or fourth party. People must begin liking the group ”
